Makai Properties came into being in 1979. The company was founded by Bob Keown to primarily market Poipu Kai Resorts’ condominiums and residential homesites for the developer. The first Makai office was located in the Tahiti Long House building before it became the Beach House Restaurante on Lawai Beach Road. In those years Makai Properties also acted as the on site, exclusive real estate broker for many of the newly built Poipu Resort condominiums such as Kiahuna Plantation, Poipu Kapili, Kiahuna Golf Village, Makahuena and Whaler’s Cove. Since that time, Makai has expanded its' office facilities, real estate services and its' staff to include a wide range of real estate specialties throughout the Garden Island.

In 1997 Makai Properties purchased their offices at Poipu Kai Resort that we occupied as a tenant for the prior ten years. Not only are we the oldest, largest and highest producing real estate firms on Kauai’s south coastline, we also enjoy a positive reputation of achieving results for our Buyers and Sellers alike.

Upon Keown's retirement in May 2005, the company passed into the hands of three senior agents with the firm, Rick Shaw, Kelly Liberatore and Roberta Charles who continue to lead the Makai Team. It was a generous and greatly appreciated offer to those dedicated agents who helped build the company over the years. Since that time we have not skipped a beat. Our clients still receive a superior level of service and expertise and to this day the company remains a top producer in Kauai's fast paced real estate market.  As new owners and decision makers we wanted to define what we did best and grow upon that. The business of real estate is rapidly changing and everyone at Makai Properties continues to uphold all the principles upon which the company came into being and have adapted all that to maintain and deliver the best client service in todays technically charged business environment.
